David Phelps

David Franklin Phelps, age 81, of Science Hill, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Jean Waddle Care Center.

Born on January 5, 1942 to Earl Cardin & Grace Cain Phelps in Science Hill. David married Carolyn Farris Phelps on January 24, 1963.

David graduated from Somerset High School where he enjoyed playing basketball. After high school David worked at Science Hill School as a bus driver & custodian to help provide for his family. In 1963, David was one of the 1st 7 employed to work at Crane Plumbing of Ferguson. David & Carolyn enjoyed demonstrating & selling Towncraft Cookware for a number of years. Later David became a life & health agent for Prudential Insurance Company, retiring in 1998. David served as Commissioner for the City of Science Hill for over 20 years. David was a charter member of the Science Hill Trinity Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carolyn of Science Hill; one daughter, Karla & Allen Crawford of Somerset; three grandsons, Andrew & Amy Crawford of Austin, TX, Ben & Brittany Crawford of Lexington, and Clinton & Shawna Polston of Science Hill; six great-grandchildren, Elijah & Teddy Crawford, Veda Crawford, Lilly, Makenna & Trinity Polston; a special niece, Sonya Morris & her family; a nephew, Bob Phelps; and a niece, Susan Trible.

David is preceded in death by his parents; sister & brother-in-law, Nancy Jean & Vernon Dick; and brother & sister-in-law, Dale & Carol Phelps.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. Glenn Cox officiating.

Burial will be in Science Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 10:00 AM Monday, July 3, 2023, at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your choice of Science Hill Trinity Church, Science Hill Cemetery Association, Inc., or Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
